Hey guys I’m looking to fit a apple carplay setup with a reverse camera in my 2G GST in like the center console area

Does anyone have any recommendations for which brand to use for the mounting kit & apple carplay?

I bought a decent Kenwood deck online. Most any deck has the capabilities you're looking for.

You will use the factory mounting brackets to mount the deck.

I bought a reverse camera from Amazon and used it with my particular deck. You can do the same.

Nice can you link me to the setup you got?

Like Amazon links for the kenwood and camera would be very much appreciated

The deck is a Kenwood DMX7705S and the back up camera was bought on Amazon, brand is Nakita.

I even bought a USB flanged outlet that I use in the cigarette lighter area. You can see that in the picture as well.

I have the kenwood dmx7706 and its ok for a media unit. my main complaints are the price tag ($300?) and the menu setup for the FM radio isnt the best. the buttons are on the wrong side of the radio and the interface feels like a cheap unit. my main argument against the kenwood is that for what it is, any basic ebay carplay unit does the same thing for cheaper.

basicaly carplay and android auto all act the same regardless of who made the head unit

if I had to reccomend a brand for you, atoto makes a head unit with wireless carplay for $150
atoto

what do i run in my dsm?, the past 2 builds I have been using a cheap ebay $40 head unit. the downside is the lack of rca cables on the back of the unit. but for $40 it does run carplay and works fine.

Thanks man.

Was it easy to install or did you have to like hire a specialist?

Also idk if it matters but my car is a 5 speed and I was wanting the reverse back up camera to automatically pop up when I go to reverse, is this possible?

I did it myself. I've been doing my own electronics for over 25 years but it's not hard at all honestly.

To activate the rear view camera you wire it into the reverse lights. Very simple and done right in the tail light area.

Just had one other question for you, after you wire everything in, say you pop your car into reverse ( and it's a 5 speed)

Does the camera automatically know your in reverse & does it pop up by itself on the screen (like a newer car) or do you have to manually press the camera button on the list of apps?

I bought a cheap Double DIN unit on Amazon with Apple Car Play. The brand is PLZ and it only cost about $120 and came with an included backup camera. You wire the camera into your backup lights, so when you put the transmission in reverse, the backup lights also power the camera on and it automatically pops up on the screen. It also lowers the volume when it's in reverse.

Just as Nathan stated above, it's wired into a reverse light so the camera view pops up automatically.

Did you need a dash kit for that too?

I didn’t. I had the factory double din stereo so I used those side brackets and surround. I did buy the Metra wiring harness so I didn’t have to cut any factory wires. Plus it makes it super easy to to install because all the colors match up with the aftermarket stereo.
