Got this turbo from someone that bought one off me I’m not sure if it’s a 14b turbo like he said can anyone help me figure out what exactly this turbo is? They’re is no play really and wheels seem to be in decent shape just need a good cleaning.
Thanks guys I appreciate it!

If you're talking about compressor housings, I don't see why there would be any that weren't OE. The 14b was stock on 90-94 DSMs, there were a lot of them, and factory replacements were abundant at the time.

I'm curious what the first aftermarket replacement DSM flanged turbo was. It would have essentially made this "obsolete".
It's still a great turbo even today, tons of fun for a street car.

Ah nice yeah it’s in good condition for how old and what it is LOL I got it bolted on this definitely eBay part but who knows !

You can indeed use a 7cm turbine housing from a 16g. You can rob one from a blown China 16g pretty cheap along with the adjustable wastegate actuator and it’s a nice cheap upgrade over the 6cm housing. Also the 6cm turbine housing is notorious for cracking with age, I haven’t seen one in many years that isn’t cracked so I’d be really shocked if the one you have there isn’t cracked.

Also speaking of cracking, if your stock 2g exhaust manifold isn’t cracked from age use that. With proper porting it will outflow that crappy Chinese tubular manifold while being far less prone to failing, the only downfall is now that the 2g manifold’s are getting old (figure the newest one is 25 years old if we’re not talking the new stock replacement ones) it’s not uncommon to see them crack as well. Those Chinese tubular manifolds are fine if you need something cheap to bolt the turbo to but they’re far from an upgrade.

yeah that tubular is cracked inside but not the housing from the turbo i checked it real good! im close to being done with this build but i am trying to run a real 16g and a better manifold but funds are tight i literally got everything but the manifold and turbo.. and only a few 100 to play with right now. i wish i can see 350 hp. what do you think i can get with this 1g turbo i do have a built 6 bolt motor with 268 /272 cams + 1 intake and exhaust valves. weisco pistons 750cc injectors LOL

If you’re planning to stay with a 16g then a ported 2g manifold or ported evo 3 manifold (hard to find these days) is the best matched. The FP race manifold is a nice piece, but the runners are a tad bit large for stuff like the 14b and 16g being they’re geared towards the heavier hitting bolt on turbos like the FP green, red, etc. however if you’re not looking to squeeze every last bit out of what you have you’d never notice the loss using the FP over the ported 2g/evo 3. I’ve seen a couple 14b cars get to 300 at the wheels (a few max effort guys have seen a bit more) but in all those cases the 7cm turbine housing was being utilized. The 350 you’re looking for is definitely obtainable with a 16g and e85 for fuel.

thanks for the advice man! can i use a evo 9 manifold and turbo? i see good deals but im not sure how big of a pain in the ass it is to install it? or do anything too annoying. if it fits im just going to grab that for now!

No, Evo 4-9 turbos spin the opposite direction and are not worth the trouble to fit.

The fp manifold will retard your spool compared to an evo3 or ported 2g, provided the collector divider is still intact on the latter two. With as small as a turbo the 16g is, you'll also not notice any improvement over your other options and instead be giving up response. It's not a good pairing.
Would you notice in day to day? Maybe yes, maybe no, but it makes no advantage to go with an fp over an evo3 unless it comes down to price and availability

On stock 450s with bumped FP to run them more like a 540cc, i was putting down about 282 to the wheels on race gas and 22 psi. 750s are way too big. For longevity, the 2G mani is best, but both 1 and 2G manis will port out more than you need. When i was doing port work for TRE, i could get consistent .2-.4 and 2-3mph from just porting the hotside. And you could spool at 14b to 21psi in 5th by 2300 rpm on 93.
