With our washer fluid reservoirs under the spare tire, it is nice to have a working Washer Fluid Low light working on the dash. Unfortunately, sometimes the sensor gets stuck and the light stays on, prompting owners to unplug the sensor wire in the trunk and run without the warning light. This article shows how to clean out the washer reservoir sensor float and restore its function.
The washer reservoir is located in the trunk, under the spare tire.
Unbolt the reservoir. Unplug the electrical connectors and lastly, the fluid hoses and flip it over. Pour out any remaining washer fluid.
Unplug sensor connector from the sensor housing.
Pry the rubber fitting out of the housing.
Separate the sensor from the rubber jacket.
Release the top cap on the sensor.
Clean the housing and float. Reinstall the sensor cap. Shake gently to make sure the float inside the sensor has free movement so it can move up and down with changing fluid levels.
Reinstall the rubber boot into the washer housing before sliding the sensor into the boot. Reconnect the sensor electrical lead.
Reverse the housing removal procedure, reconnecting the electrical plugs and hoses and fill with washer fluid. Provided the dash bulb hasn't burned out, you should have a working alert for when you are running low on washer fluid.
